Side with insufficient mating material was granted win by timeout

Opponent had insufficient material (K+B only) but was awarded win by timeout. According to F.A.Q., this is an uncommon case where it should have been a draw. I am puzzled...? Software bug perhaps?
Well, it certainly is a FAQ...but the game you're speaking of certainly was not insufficient material.
You still had an opposite coloured bishop (and a pawn as well). There are plenty of checkmates possible.

You are citing the FAQ. Maybe read the whole paragraph:
"Note that it can be possible to mate with a single knight or bishop if the opponent has a piece that could block the king."
Thank you, everybody, for your responses. I had not considered the "smothered mate" scenarios in the broader picture.

The "smothered mate" principle can indeed apply in some cases (although I am not envisioning how it could develop in this particular case. Maybe it's a sort of puzzle! :-)

Thank you

Just let the white king move to a light-squared corner, say a8, put the white bishop on b8 or a7, and the black king on a6 or c8 respectively, then mate with the black bishop on the long diagonal.
Yes, Brian-E, you are correct, that would be one way in which White could be checkmated. I don't know why that didn't occur to me ;-)

Thank you
